Burkhard Voiges’ photographic cityscapes of Berlin are perplexing. And precisely because of this, they develop a strange pull. Absent are any explanations, spectacular zooms or panoramas, instead one sees a sequence of unchanging tableaus from a medium distance.
There is a certain brittleness in this gaze, an almost defiant refusal to explain or even gloss over anything. But there is also a cautiousness in it, as if the viewer does not want to dare to disturb what he sees in its very being.
Through Burkhard Voiges’ eyes, Berlin lacks character and identity; the city appears like a storage room where things have been left that someone once wanted but has long since forgotten why.
